Dark Souls 3 Modder Replaces Textures With Goosebumps, Shrek, & More

in a bizarre move, one video game modder replaces all of the textures in developer From Software’s action-RPG Dark Souls 3 with Goosebumps, Shrek, and more.

As many fans will attest, due to its dark and intricately designed environments, punishing gameplay, and myriad droves of fearsome foes, Dark Souls 3 is one of the most original titles of this year, which easily puts it in the top 10 games of 2016 so far. Of course, there are some gamers like the YouTuber Limit Breakers who thinks that the game could benefit from easing up on all of the gloomy imagery and let in a little bit of airy, lighthearted fare.
Bearing this in mind, Limit Breakers took it upon themselves to replace all of the textures in Dark Souls 3 with in-jokes for the action-RPG’s community, as well as several of the Internet’s most outlandish running gags, including, but not limited to, Shrek, the skull trumpet meme, and of course, the United States of America’s national treasure, Nicolas Cage. These kinds of strange shenanigans definitely lend credence to the YouTuber’s claim in the video’s description, “Some people say games are art. I like to think we have proved otherwise.”
As seen in Limit Breakers’ video below, practically everything that can be seen is covered in these textures, with menu items displaying them, character gear being wrapped in them, and even atmospheric effects like smoke and the glow of Dark Souls 3‘s bonfires projecting them. The YouTuber was able to accomplish this bizarre feat by utilizing NexusMods user S17L’s mod called “iGP11,” which lets any player replace the textures of Dark Souls 3 with their own images.
This isn’t the first time that Limit Breakers re-imagined Dark Souls 3‘s entire landscape by replacing its original textures with weird pictures. As it happens, not long ago, the YouTuber figured the Kingdom of Lothric would benefit from having a crab displayed on everything with the texture mod. The results were just as unusual as the visuals found in the clip above.
Furthermore, Limit Breakers’ use of Shrek in the texture mod builds upon another instance of the ogre’s likeness being used previously in Dark Souls 3. A while back, one player generated a protagonist that looked as close to the DreamWorks Animation character as possible and had Shrek defending his swamp in the game’s PvP mode.
Considering the fact that Dark Souls 3 has only been out for several months, folks ought to expect even more zany mods like these to get made, and there are already a king’s ransom of fan-made oddities related to the title online, such as ThePruld’s “Take On Me” music video for the game. With this being the case, all that’s left to do is praise the sun and hope other die-hard fans of the series take the lead by upping the ante with even more eccentric mods in the future.
